Building agency in the face of uncertainty

This workshop and facilitation tool was developed by Keri Facer, Richard Sandford, Carey Jewitt, Mike Sharples and Simon Mauger as a resource to support groups to become aware of their different relationships with and assumptions about the future.

An embodied workshop, it helps diverse groups understand the different orientations that they have towards making change and achieving goals; and the different ideas they have about what is possible and achievable. It supports people to understand each other’s perspectives and to begin to negotiate new relationships.

We have a series of guides to support facilitators and others to use this tool.

“The tool revealed power dynamics […] and facilitated an open and safe dialogue on what faculty staff needed to feel more influence in relation to the center’s future.”

“Something really happened to some people, because they noticed that it is a mirror and that they are or will be in a certain position because of themselves and others. Some people have now freed themselves from a ‘closed, fixed future’ and felt pride and resilience throughout in the exercise.”
